Police say they have
recovered a cellphone belonging to a Hamilton man who was last seen
Monday when he took two men for a test drive of a pickup truck he was
trying to sell online.
They have also
released descriptions of the two men believed to have met with Timothy
Bosma, 32. Homicide investigators have taken over the case because of
the “unusual nature” of the disappearance.
“We always have to
hold out hope,” Det.-Sgt. Matt Kavanagh told a news conference Friday
when asked whether Bosma was still believed to be alive.

Police said the two
men last seen with Bosma are believed to have contacted an Etobicoke man
about selling the same model pickup truck online. The two suspects
arrived at a business on foot to test drive the car on Sunday, Kavanagh
said.
On Thursday afternoon,
police found Bosma’s cellphone in an industrial complex in west
Brantford – the direction he was last believed to have been heading with
the two men.
No other items were
recovered, but police said they were able to track the cellphone they
believed the suspects used to contact Bosma.

That is how
investigators were able to speak with the man in Etobicoke, who told
police he thought it was suspicious that the men who arrived at his
business to look at his truck were on foot. He was returned to his
business after the test drive.
Police said they’ve
also received information that Bosma’s vehicle was seen travelling in
the downtown area of south Brantford at 10:10 p.m. on Monday.
Investigators are
asking any business owners with surveillance cameras in the area to
review footage for that day between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Police are not sure what route the vehicle may have travelled through Brantford.
Bosma’s own cellphone
was turned off shortly after his disappearance and the phone believed to
be used by the two men was only active for three months – its signal
bouncing off cell towers in Etobicoke – before it was also disconnected,
Kavanagh said.
As police were making
these discoveries on Thursday, Bosma’s wife, Sharlene, pleaded with the
men she believes kidnapped her husband to return him safely.
“It is just a truck.
You don’t need him, but I do and our daughter needs her daddy. So
please, please let him come home,” she tearfully told a news conference.

Friends and family had taken to social media, posting pictures of Bosma and pleas for help in finding him.
Hamilton police have
dedicated 150 officers to a ground and air search for Bosma, utilizing
K-9 units and reassigning officers to the homicide unit, Supt. Dan
Kinsella told media.
“We will continue to commit any and all resources,” he said.
Police have confirmed a
description of one of the suspects. He is described as a white male in
his mid-20s, 6-foot-1 to 6-foot-2, 170 to 180 pounds. He has light to
medium, short brown hair, is unshaved and was wearing an orange shirt
and running shoes.
Also described, was a
unique tattoo on one of the man’s wrists where a watch would normally
be: A box framing the word “Ambition.”
The second man also in
his mid-20s is described as white, 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10, small to
medium build, dark hair, wearing a red-hooded sweatshirt with the hood
pulled up over his head.
Bosma’s Dodge Ram, which has not been recovered, is described as black with an Ontario licence plate number 726 7ZW.

The British yachtsman Andrew Simpson was a leading figure in the development of the Artemis Racing 72ft wing-sailed catamaran for the upcoming America's Cup.
He has died at the age of 36 after being trapped under the boat when it
capsized in San Francisco bay during a routine training exercise.
Simpson,
known to all fellow sailors as "Bart", won a gold medal at the Beijing
Olympics in 2008 in the Star class with his long-term sailing partner,
Iain Percy. The two had been friends since meeting at a competition
while boys, and last year campaigned again with the Star in Weymouth,
Dorset, where they won the Olympic silver medal. They had led throughout
the regatta and were prevented from taking their second gold by just
one wave that lifted a fellow competitor at the finish line of the medal
race. In 2009 Simpson was appointed MBE following his Beijing success.

All
sailors have their specialities: Simpson's extended from his search for
speed into the nuts and bolts of how it might be obtained. His
meticulous boat preparation was second to none, and Percy was content to
leave the majority of the details of this to his crewman. Simpson spent
many hours working on their Star and was rewarded with unsurpassed boat
performance.

In addition, he was a superb athlete. He knew he had
to be extremely fit to give the necessary physical energy to sailing a
boat at its limits and concentrate on the mental aspects of sail trim
and tactics. Percy relied a great deal on the input he received from
Simpson, who had trained physically for his task after admitting that he
had "flabbed up" after a year of not sailing the Finn, the men's
heavyweight single-handed dinghy.
Born in Chertsey, Surrey,
Simpson begain sailing at the age of six, with his father in a Seafly
dinghy from Christchurch, Dorset, and progressed into the Royal Yachting Association
youth squad, where the chief coach, Jim Saltonstall, took pleasure in
how Simpson "enjoyed learning to sail better all the time". He was also
able to sail while at Pangbourne college, a boarding school in Berkshire, and went on to take an economics degree at University College London.

Simpson
proved to be the perpetual bridesmaid, never quite able to best his two
contemporaries, Percy and Ben Ainslie. However, he showed no lasting
concern and was happy to contribute to joint success with Percy.
After
finishing second in the Finn trials for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he
became Percy's training partner in this class. When Percy won gold, he
said that the medal was "half Andrew's".
It was natural that Simpson would follow his skipper
into the America's Cup with the Swedish Artemis team, and he was full
of enthusiasm, relocating his family to San Francisco for six months.
Constantly smiling, Simpson was enjoying the campaign. "This may not be
racing for Britain," he said recently, "but it is in preparation for the
time when our country can mount a challenge."

He is survived by his wife, Leah, and two sons, Freddie and Hamish.

When Andrew Simpson was at Pangbourne college, I was director of
sixth-form studies and sailing coach. Pangbourne started life as a
nautical college, and sailing takes place on Burghfield Lake.
A
brilliant, intensely competitive but fair-minded member of the sailing
team for five years, Andrew returned for a day in 2008. He described his
nerve-jangling gold medal race to the whole school, gave an
inspirational coaching talk to its sailors about racing and
self-improvement, and competed in a match. Always a popular figure, he
never let success go to his head.

The Golden Arches are cozying up to Charles Ramsey, but not everyone is lovin’ it.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE:MCD) said the
company plans to “personally reach out” to the Cleveland man whose
quick-thinking heroics helped put an end to a horrifying decade-long
abduction. The fast-food behemoth was unwittingly pulled into the media
frenzy after Ramsey’s destined-for-virality account of the rescue, which involved his eating a McDonald’s meal at the moment he heard screams coming from his neighbor’s home.

When news of Ramsey’s choice of cuisine broke, Twitter instantly lit up,
as it tends to do. Thousands of users sent tweets to the company,
imploring McDonald’s to respond to the shout out. The company eventually
responded with a simple tweet commending Ramsey and saluting the courage of the victims, but the story didn’t -- or couldn’t -- end there.

Ramsey has since become an Internet sensation, with all the memes,
parody Twitter accounts and auto-tuned YouTube videos that go along with
it. Under the hashtag #WorthLifetimeFries, Twitter users have continued
to weave the McDonald’s brand into Ramsey’s celebrity narrative, with
many users calling on the company to reward Ramsey’s heroics with free
food.
In response to the outpouring, Danya Proud, director of communications for McDonald’s USA, released the following statement:
“Over the course of the past several days, thousands of people have reached out to us expressing their sentiment for McDonald's to do something for Mr. Ramsey. We hear them! That said, out of respect for the victims involved, as well as Mr. Ramsey, both McDonald's and the local franchisees will personally be reaching out to Mr. Ramsey directly as we said we would with our tweet.”

McDonald’s has yet to clarify what “reaching out” will entail.
International Business Times reached out to Proud for additional
information, but she declined to elaborate. It’s hard to blame her.
However the McDonald’s-Ramsey pairing plays out, from a PR standpoint,
it’s practically a no-win situation. On the one hand, any attempt by
McDonald’s to capitalize on an event so replete with horrific details is not going to play well for a company that already has more than its share of enemies. (The Los Angeles Times has already called the company’s involvement “shameless.”)

At the same time, we’re living in the age of the eternal
conversation, when even multinational brands are expected to acknowledge
and embrace their role in user-generated pop culture. When footage
of an NYPD officer giving a barefoot man a pair of Skechers went viral,
Skechers USA (NYSE:SKX) responded by donating 50 pairs of insulated
boots to a New York homeless shelter. But not everyone thinks that’s the
best approach for McDonald’s in this situation.

“I would leave it alone,” said Bruce Rubin, senior counsel for rbb
Public Relations, who specializes in crisis management. “If there is
even the appearance that they’re taking advantage of an unfortunate
situation, it could backfire.”
Rubin, who has worked on sensitive issues for everyone from private
families to Fortune 500 companies, said the best approach for a big-name
brand dealing with an unfolding situation is to play it conservatively.
That means minimizing the unknown variables, something the animated
Ramsey -- who has a history of domestic abuse -- is not likely to do.
“These things can get pretty squishy,” he said. “This individual is a character, but he seems like kind of a wild card.”

Large companies are notoriously image conscious, which is why they
are sometimes reluctant to acknowledge their involvement in a viral
phenomenon, even when circumstances aren’t so tragic. In February, when
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio awkwardly lunged for a bottle of Poland Spring
water during his rebuttal to President Obama’s State of the Union
address, Twitter users beseeched the company within seconds, begging Poland Spring for a response.

Poland Spring’s parent company, Nestlé, waited until the following afternoon before posting a good-humored reply to its Facebook page.
And yet even that small bit of hesitation led to charges that Poland
Spring was out of touch. One social media professional told IBTimes that
the bottled-water brand missed a “golden opportunity.”
Kim Garst, a social media branding strategist, said there are several
factors that could complicate a similar effort in the case of
McDonald’s, most notably Ramsey’s history of domestic abuse. What’s
more, she said, McDonald’s is only further diluting the situation by
dragging its feet.

“The incident occurred Monday,” she said. “It’s Thursday now. In the
world of social media, that’s eons. The appearance will be
that McDonald’s took the time to concoct a calculated response, probably
involving their marketing department, legal team, etc. In a world where
authenticity matters, this will not play well.”
Rubin has a slightly different take. He said he understands the
pressure to respond to situations instantly via social media, but he
said such responses can cause companies more harm than good. He said the
wait-and-see approach may be out of fashion in the Twitter age, but
it’s not obsolete.
“These things pass quicker than people realize,” he said. “I get calls
from panicked clients all the time. They say, ‘We need to respond to
this right away.’ I tell them, ‘No we don’t.’ There nothing in the
Constitution that says you have to respond to something. You only have
to respond if it’s in your best interest.” Source

My mom is a fighter. When she was a high schooler, that fighting
spirit got her into trouble. It was before Title IX and well before
women were allowed to wrestle or box or beat the snot out of their
opponents in a cage. So she fought in the hallways of her high school,
which led to many visits to many different principals' offices. Though
she gave up her pugilistic ways as she grew up and had kids, the
fighting spirit never went away. She fought for cleaner air, better
schools, better programs for kids in our town, and when she was
diagnosed with cancer, she decided to fight for the cancer survivors who
had it much worse than she did.

My mother-in-law, too, was a fighter. After her second diagnosis of
cancer, she fought to have the life she wanted in her final years. She
knew cancer would end her life much too early, so she fought to spend
time surrounded by family, friends and the gardens she so happily
cultivated. Even when cancer stole every bit of her energy, she fought
to spend her few minutes with her children, friends and family.

Every mom of a UFC fighter I've come across has been a fighter.
Inevitably, her first fight was to keep her son or daughter out of the
cage. After giving up that fight, she focused her fight to make sure her
fighter was ready for the cage. Ronda Rousey's mom did this by waking
her daughter up with armbars. Chael Sonnen's mom does it by being at her
son's side when training. Rashad Evans' mom does it with motivational
speeches that would make Eric Taylor proud.

see a mom in the cage, it won't surprise you to see her with her hand
raised.

| Partial Solar Eclipse |
The partial eclipse took place over WA just after sunrise, when the moon passed in front of the sun.
Several
Perthnow readers sent in early morning pictures of the phenomenon,
including David Hanwith-Horden, from New Norcia, 134km north-east of
Perth and Greg Loakes, who photographed the eclipse from his Scarborough
home, just after 7am.

Another reader, Jon Hornby, photographed
the eclipse from the Pilbara, saying: "On a mine site just a bit north
of Newman, the eclipse was amazing, lasting over 45mins!''
The cloudy, inclement weather ruined the view for some people and it
will be 10 years before WA experiences another solar eclipse, with the
next one due in April 2023.
The eclipse was at its fullest just south of Newman in the Pilbara. In Perth it was more of a partial eclipse.
The best vantage point for the 2023 eclipse will be near Exmouth in the North West of the state.
